Letters written by Hawley to Horace Greeley, and to local newspaper publishers, 1837-1841, one including a note to Hawley from William A. Alcott; letters to Hawley from his brother, Alonzo Hawley, David Selden, and Thomas V. Welch, 1837-1885. Subjects include New York State politics, music, land sales on the Buffalo and Tonawanda Reservations, and a state assembly bill for the preservation of the scenery of Niagara Falls. Also, various invitations, 1825-1858, including one to Jackson's victory ball at Mr. Thayer's Assembly Room; a list of the birthplaces of New York State Constitutional Convention members, [1846]; Hawley's membership certificate in the New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1853; two accounts of Hawley & Co.'s Buffalo, Detroit, and Chicago Express, and an engraved logo of the company, 1842; and papers relating to the common schools of Buffalo, 1838-ca. 1847.

Born in Moreau, Saratoga County, N.Y., 28 Oct. 1812; graduated from Union College in 1833. Came to Buffalo in 1833, where he taught school, practiced law, and served as superintendent of schools in 1844, 1846, and 1847.
